Rooney, 28, is now in talks with United to extend his current deal.

As footballers you keep you in contacted with each other. "If he was going to leave Real Madrid, I think Manchester United would be the place he would come back to. That's my view but no one will ever know. I think the opportunity has gone now. The 28 year old Pourtugal forward, ended up extending his contract until 2018 in September. Manchester United could have done with their former hero during a troubled first half of this season. In the end the Champions were probably used by Ronaldo's camp to get the megabucks deal they wanted from Real Madrid. Rio Ferdinand believes his old pal is the best player in the world and he hopes that will be shown when Ronaldo goes up against Lionel Messi and Franck Ribery in the Ballon D'Or award on Monday. Ronaldo scored 69 goals for club and country in 2013. Ferdinand said: "We had a debate about it in training. I think he has been the best in the Callander year definitely.
